Shadows and Shade, by Amanda Cashure, quickly became one of my favorite series EVER when I read it at the beginning of the year. This was only reinforced when I recently reread it to prepare for the release of the next book in December 2021.
Shade is an orphan slave who spends her days trying to avoid her master (who has taken a liking to her now that she’s of age). After being chained to a pole as punishment, she’s kidnapped… er, saved?… by four strange brothers who take her back to their home in the enchanted forest. Once there, she learns that the brothers are Sabers, meaning they have supernatural abilities determined by the seed they were born with: chaos, darkness, alpha and allure. And they’re not just any Sabers. They’re Saber Princes.
When Shade becomes trapped in a magical bubble with the four brothers, they set off to find a way out before the bubble shrinks completely and kills her, while also trying to thwart the King who is trying to destroy their entire world.
Shade is a little ball of sarcasm and pranks (spoiler: some involve tacos) that will leave you literally laughing out loud. The relationships she develops with each brother is unique and wonderful and you’ll have trouble picking a favorite.
There are currently 5 books in the series with the 6th to release December 2021. There is also a companion series - Hunters and Secrets - with only one book so far, which is also fantastic!
PLEASE NOTE: Shadows and Shade is a slow burn REVERS HAREM and is available on Kindle Unlimited. I recommend the boxed set (books 1-3) if you want bonus steamy scenes.
Pride and Prejudice and… dragons?! What’s not to like?
If you’re like me, you love any iteration of Pride and Prejudice. And this one does not disappoint. Mr. Darcy comes to Merryton/Longbourn to request the help of Elizabeth and her father in finding his stolen dragon egg. As Dragon Friends and Keepers, they can all hear and speak to dragons, and are required to help keep the existence of dragons a secret from the rest of the world. If they don’t find the dragon egg before it hatches and imprints, then Darcy will be forced to use the Dragon Slayer blade he carries with him to kill the baby dragon, or risk their secret and all-out war.
This is the first in the Jane Austin’s Dragons series. Essentially, Pride and Prejudice has been split into several books and I’ll warn that the burn is sloooow, but so worth the wait.
This book was an absolute delight. Set in an alternate 1846 Rhode Island, where the number of magical houses are quickly becoming extinct, writer Merritt Fernsby discovers the estate he inherited on a remote island (Whimbrel House) is one of them. How does he come to learn this? The house locks him inside and won’t let him leave.
Luckily, Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms is already on her way, ready and equipped to subdue the unruly home that is given to throwing tantrums and playing tricks on the inhabitants. The house, however, proves exceedingly difficult to tame, and there may be something more dangerous lurking in the shadows.
While I was half expecting this book to be a gothic horror, it was wonderfully cozy. While every character was interesting and complex, Whimbrel House is by far my favorite, drawing more than a few laughs and tears from me along the journey to discover it’s past. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll shudder. And when you’re done, you’ll want to start it all over again.
